Antartica part 2: the Locals

We saw so much and were so close to so many animals from land or sea, that I have decided not to talk here, but instead, to show and hopefully make you feel what it is to be so close. We left our ship at least twice a day and this is what we experienced:

                                    (The Cascades looked the same during the Oregon Trail times) I cannot recall how often I said to Sandee within the comfort of our Subaru Outback: “Wow imagine, this was once a part of the Oregon Trail, without this road the trail must have been brutal.”                           (Instead of Dams there were 20ft falls here requiring overland portage) The famous Oregon Trail was used by more than 350,000 men, women and children between 1841 and 1867 (the year when the first train arrived in Walla Walla), while leaving 10,000 shallow graves along the 2,000 mile trail.          (This may not be exactly what one saw on the trail in 1848 but it must have come close to that type of views) Because I am a history fan, I will digress for awhile before getting to our September 202...

Seven weeks in Oregon Part 2

(Peaceful Peddling in Silence) The next location we were in love with was Klamath Falls Lake. We stayed at the very rural Harrimans Resort. Very memorable here was having a canoe for half a day peddling all by our lonely selves on this beautiful lake, where we and birds were the only ones making noise.  (White Pelicans we rarely see on the East coast) (Our famous bald Eagle) (More  and more pelicans) (Some type of wading bird) One of the discoveries there was the phenomena of drifting clumps of so-called elusive Mares Eggs, which only exist in waters that have freshwater springs with a very specific temperature range. The many clumps of these blue green algae are only found in a few places around the world, and not much is known about them. Cyprus, a tale of 2 countries.

(Walking the Green Line of the last divided city in the world - Lefkosia aka Nicosia) It is february 2024, and we return from our regular Kenya Mission trip in January, this time accompanied by my sister Marjo and her husband Herman as well as our friends Linda and Gary. As Linda and Gary made the long trip from the US to Kenya and because Amsterdam is cold and dreary in February and especially this year, we concocted a follow up trip to Cyprus an island not yet visited and decidedly warmer. (Border crossing into Turkish Cyprus) (Turks are kind enough to also have Greek as a translation of their warning) (The Greek side of a border crossing has a civil rights  stone monument calling for a spirit of brotherhood in this divided city) Our 10 days there were divided in touring the southern coast of the Greek side (the republic of Cyprus), followed by a trip into the Troodos mountain area and then onward to our last stay in Lefkosia (the Greek name for Nicosia) the capital, the last div...
