Idaho, magnificent Autumn Colors at their Peak sept/oct 2024
Why Idaho would you say? Well the daughter of our friends Gary and Linda was marrying in Sun Valley, a posh beautiful overpriced location invaded by famous Californians and once a home to Ernest Hemingway, who spent his final years there. Not a reason to necessarily go there, but we were invited, so off we went.
Well just like Oregon we had not really visited Idaho on our 2013 roadtrip through the US from National Park to National Park as there are no national parks in Idaho. So why not use the wedding visit as an excuse to see more of Idaho?
Well, we definitely did Idaho (for 27 days - 4 days wedding, 12 days by ourselves and 11 days with Gary and Linda). And per below picture, the colors were everywhere and you will see them often throughout this blog.
Idaho is famous for skiing, hot springs, a never stopping erupting geyser that competed with Old Faithful in such ways, that in 1937 the Secretary of the Interior sent a telegram to the city of Soda Springs to turn the geyser off, “because it is throwing the world famous Old Faithful Geyser off schedule”.
After some deliberation the city decided to put Soda Springs Geyser on an hourly timer, when it shoots 70 degree Fahrenheit carbonated water more than 70 ft in the air every hour on the hour or 8,760 times a year. This man made geyser was discovered by accident as a group of local businessmen were drilling for hot water to build a pool and a health resort.
We rented a Cross Trek Subaru from an organization called Truro (my plug to spread the news) a car rental organization that like Air B&B rents out privately owned cars or cars from small entrepreneurs who bought a few extra cars for exactly that reason and
